Good For You
Taking care of a family is a demanding job. Keeping kids eating healthy and helping them make their own healthy choices can be a huge challenge.
But moms need to take time to focus on their own healthy eating habits too. Here are some tips and time savers to maintaining a healthy diet and staying healthy.
-
Keep a food diary. It will help you see where you tend to make unhealthy food choices. Then you can make a plan to correct them.
-
Eat every three hours or so to ward off the temptation to binge or grab the closest fast food meal to satisfy your hunger. The hungrier you are before a meal, the more likely you are to overeat.
-
Carry a "snack bag" in your purse with healthy things to munch on, like carrot sticks, pretzels, etc. Or, take a mini-cooler bag to work and keep snacks such as yogurt, cottage cheese and single-serving bottles of milk on hand for when the munchies hit. This will help you avoid the vending machine and other junk-food choices.
-
At mealtime, have a glass of milk instead of caffeinated tea or sugary soft drinks to help meet your calcium needs for the day.
-
Substitute low-fat yogurt or sour cream in recipes that call for heavy cream or mayonnaise. This adds flavor and cuts fat and calories.
-
Low-fat dairy products can reduce fat and calories in desserts like pudding, cheesecake, cakes and cookies. Just use yogurt or sour cream in place of butter and/or shortening for a lighter texture and creamier, tangier taste.
-
Even 15 or 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day can help relieve stress and provide much-needed "alone" time.
